1954: Elvis visited Scotty Moore and Bill Black to rehearse, and played through nearly every song he knew. Neither of them was very impressed with Elvis. However, Scotty agreed to tell Sam Philips that it
would be worth trying out Elvis in the studio.
1955: Elvis performed three shows this day; at the Hoedown Club, Corpus Christi, Texas, at the Hodges Park, De Leon, Texas, and at the Memorial Hall, Brownwood,
1956: Elvis had left New York the day before by train, and this morning Elvis arrived in Memphis. The train stopped a few miles before it would arrive at the main station in Memphis, so that Elvis
could go home to Audubon Drive in peace from his fans. He spent the afternoon with his family and Barbara Hearn. In the evening he did a show in Russwood Park, Memphis.
1957: After hearing of the death of
Judy Tyler, his co-star in “Jailhouse Rock”, Elvis showed up at George Klein's house early in the morning, crying. Elvis later told a journalist; “I remember the last night I saw them. They were leaving on a trip...All of us boys
really loved that girl. She meant a lot to all of us. I don't believe I can stand to see the movie we made together now...”.
1958: At this time Elvis went through basic training in Fort Hood, Texas
before leaving for Germany. Elvis and his family had rented a house in Killeen, just a few miles away from the military camp. The motion picture “King Creole” had premiered in the U.S. just two days earlier. Gladys Presley died just a
month and a half later on August 14th.
1959: Elvis was still serving his military service in Germany. He lived on Goethestrasse in Bad Neuheim.
Elvis visited his mother's grave on the 4th of July. The day before his father Vernon married Dee Stanley. Elvis did not attend the wedding.
1961: Elvis probably spent the 4th of July at Graceland. Just
a couple of days later he left for Florida to start the filming of the movie “Follow That Dream”.
1962: At this time Elvis drove from Los Angeles to Memphis. Three days earlier Priscilla
had left for Germany.
1963: Elvis and the guys staged their annual fireworks show at Graceland. Within the next couple of days Elvis returned to Hollywood to start working on the movie “Viva Las
1964: Elvis spent this period working with the movie “Girl Happy”. American Bandstand celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the launch of Elvis’ musical career.
It covered his 8 years on the Pop Charts. The soundtrack to the motion picture “Viva Las Vegas” hit #92 on the Billboard chart.
1965: We do not know exactly what Elvis did on this day.
We do know that he had time off from both film- and record-making. The motion picture “Tickle Me” opened nationwide in the U.S. just three days later.
1966: Elvis had initiated a week
of rehearsals for the movie “Double Trouble” at MGM three days earlier. The movie “Paradise, Hawaiian Style” opened nationwide in the U.S. just two days later.
We do not know exactly what Elvis did on this day. We know Elvis had begun the filming of “Speedway” only 8 days earlier, so it is likely that Elvis was filming in Los Angeles on the 4th of July.
Elvis’ Rolls Royce was auctioned in Hollywood to benefit SHARE, a children’s charity. Elvis spent the 4th of July in Palm Springs.
1969: Elvis spent this day at Graceland. The next day he flew
to Los Angeles to prepare his upcoming Las Vegas opening.
1970: Elvis spent this day at Graceland. In the evening he rented the Memphian Theater to watch movies. The next day Elvis flew to the West Coast,
with a stopover at the Marriott Hotel in Chicago.
1971: After the usual fireworks for the 4th of July, Elvis and his entourage went to the Crosstown Theater to watch movies.
Elvis spent this day at Graceland. During this period of time he was watching a lot of movies at the Memphian Theater. Two days later, on July 6th, he was introduced to Linda Thompson for the first time when she attended a movie at the Memphian Theater.
1973: After completing his summer tour on July 3rd, Elvis returned home to Memphis. He stayed at Graceland the following days.
1974: During this
day Elvis put on a 90 minute karate demonstration with Ed Parker at the Tennessee Karate Institute.
1975: Elvis spent this period of time at Graceland. Seven days earlier he went through minor surgery at
a physicist’s office in Memphis. Four days later on July 8th, he flew to Oklahoma City to begin his third tour of the year.
1976: Elvis performed at the Mabee Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma,
at 2.30 p.m.
