Elvis Home Recordings

Home, but NOT alone ...

Elvis was actually almost never home alone. His private recordings are not particularly “private” either, in the sense that he was by himself when they were made. For instance, in comparison with Bob Dylan, another great performer within pop music, it does exists several private recordings and he is actually completely alone during these recordings. It was never like that with Elvis. I really wish that Elvis had done some true “private recordings”. I believe that would have brought us closer to the man Elvis, we would have gained a greater insight into his personality, and last but not least we would have ended up with a stack of truly great recordings.

Elvis' home recording is characterized by the fact that there is always more people present in the same room; listeners and friends whom not necessarily had an active role in the making of the music. There is much humor and therefore a lot of nonsense going on. This is also something that recurs in his studio sessions, where he often brought with him several friends from the Memphis Mafia. I am convinced that his focus and the willingness to constantly strive to achieve the best possible result suffered by this.

When Elvis went to Germany to serve in the army, the Colonel sent with him a tape recorder so that Elvis could do some recordings while abroad. Unfortunately, most of the recordings Elvis did in Germany is far from what we might call serious attempts to make good recordings. The same fact applies to the private recordings Elvis made later in the 60s and 70s. The few times Elvis did an attempt to do serious recording at home (such as the stroke of genius in form of “Suppose” from 1966) we notice that he has a genuine interest in the song he performs, and who knows what kind of gems we would have been left with if he had done this more often. Elvis was capable, as both a pianist and a guitarist, and he could have given us wonderful home recordings if only he had chosen to do this alone, under full attention, with songs he actually believed in.

Elvis' Private Recordings

Keith Flynn has made a very comprehensive overview of all the home recordings that we currently know of on his website (www.keithflynn.com). It is evident that there is still some uncharted territory. We know about 150 different songs / recordings, where 40 are still unpublished. I have no knowledge about the state of these recordings, and it is quite possible that the quality is so bad that it is not suitable to publish the songs. Personally, I hope that everything ultimately will be released regardless of the recordings condition.

Among the released versions, there exists a considerable variation in the actual editing of the songs. Some releases have included everything ("wharts and all"); while on other releases, the producers have edited the material with an understanding that this will improve the general listening experience. Personally, I like best the versions that are edited, since this to a larger extent highlights Elvis' performance of the song. So much of what is going on between the songs are just nonsense and sometimes plain silly; the song begins, then some laughter, the song is interrupted, then a little chit-chat, the song is restarted, more laughter etc. For purely historical reasons, it is of course important that we have all the material available, but to get a proper impression of the actual song and the performance, all the interruptions is just disturbing. The sound is also unstable to put it mildly.

I have chosen to divide the recordings into sessions (Session). I have done this to simplify the review of the content on the different record releases, and to increase the general overview of the songs. I have only listed the songs that actually have been released (in a few cases, I have listed a few unreleased songs, and those are marked in red).

Rumors ...

A few years back someone presented an alleged Elvis home recording, presumably from 1959. After further analysis by Ernst Jorgensen (considered by many to be one of the world's foremost connoisseurs of Elvis' music) in 2004, the conclusion was that this was not an Elvis recording at all. It is timely to believe that this was an attempt of fraud by some creative souls.

On Record ...

First after Elvis' death in 1977, the interest in the King's private recordings increased. An entirely expected development considering that Elvis would never record any new songs. These unreleased recordings (together with audience and soundboard recordings of his shows) was the only way to hear him perform songs he had never done in the recording studio.

The bootleg producers started the ball. Already in 1978, the first record appeared which was mainly devoted to private recordings: Forever Young, Forever Beautiful. It was not before 1984, when RCA released the box set A Golden Celebration, were the official label collected several private recordings on one release. Prior to this, only Elvis a Legendary Performer Vol. 4 contained a couple of home recordings.

In the 90s, things really started to speed up. Bootleg companies released a series of CDs with home recordings. BMG followed up properly in 1999 (The Home Recordings) and 2000 (In a Private Moment), although the box sets Platinum: A Life in Music and Peace in the Valley had contained some scattered tracks of home recorded songs. In 2006 and 2010, respectively Made in Memphis (BMG) and Off Duty with Private Presley (Memphis Recording Service) was released.

Før dette hadde bare Elvis A Legendary Performer Vol. 4 inneholdt to opptak.

BMG fulgte skikkelig opp først i 1999 (The Home Recordings) og 2000 (In A Private Moment), selv om boksene Platinum: A Life In Music og Peace In The Valley hadde inneholdt noen spredte innslag med hjemmelaget materiale. I 2006 og 2010 ble henholdsvis Made In Memphis (BMG) og Off Duty With Private Presley (Memphis Recording Service) sluppet på markedet.

Forever Young, Forever Beautiful – 1978 - Bootleg: Memphis Flash Records

This release, the first primarily devoted to Elvis' private recordings, were only available via direct mail order sales or from a few selected retailers. It was initially only released on vinyl (no CD release has surfaced later). Paul Lichter, known for a wide variety of books about Elvis, is responsible for this release. The cover art surely warrants a comment; this is probably the worst album cover on an Elvis record ever! Paul, Paul, Paul, how could you...? The songs on this release is taken from Session 2 (May 1958 Eddie Fadal's home, Waco, Texas). Eddie just started the tape recorder, and the result was these recordings.

Intimate With Elvis - 2002 - Bootleg: Memory Records

Intimate with Elvis includes a selection of recordings, which almost corresponds exactly to what we find on the CD A Private Moment with the King from 1998. Tracks 1-7 are taken from Session 8 (November 1973, The Thompson Home, Memphis, Tennessee). Track 8 is taken from Session 9 (April 1974, 845 Chino Canyon Road, Palm Springs Home, California). Off Duty With Private Presley – 2010 - Memphis Recording Service

The Memphis Recording Service label has come up with several quality releases. This release adds well to that category. Off Duty contains a 100-page book packed with great photos (including several previously unpublished) and newly remastered recordings. The disc contains songs from Session 2 (May 1958, Eddie Fadal's home, Waco, Texas) and Session 4 (summer (or November) 1959, Goethestrasse, Bad Nauheim, Germany). All tracks are previously released on various bootleg CDs.

Up Close And Personal - 2012 - Flashlight Records

This CD is entirely devoted to home recordings. The songs from session 6 boast with stereo recordings from newly found sources. This, I believe, is not anything more than electronically repossessed stereo. It is NOT likely that these songs initially were recorded in stereo! It includes 21 tracks from Session 2 (May 1958 Eddie Fadal's home, Waco, Texas), 11 tracks from Session 4 (summer (or November) 1959, Goethestrasse, Bad Nauheim, Germany) and 9 tracks from Session 6 (Fall 1960, 525 Perugia Way. Bel Air, Los Angeles, California).

Bel Air, Los Angeles, California).

Session 6 (stereo recording from newly found source tape/previously unreleased): 1. You ll Never Walk Alone, 2. If I Loved You (#1), 3. The Lord s Prayer / If I loved you (#2), 4. I Wonder, I Wonder, I Wonder, 5. An Evening Prayer, 6. Make Believe, 7. She Wears My Ring, 8. Sweet Leilani (#1), 9. Sweet Leilani (#2) - Session 2: 10. Sail Along The Silvery Moon/I Understand Just How I Feel, 11. Happy Happy Birthday Baby (#1), 12. Dialogue, 13. I Can't Help It, 14. Dialogue, 15. Who's Sorry Now (#1), 16. Who's Sorry Now (#2), 17. Happy Happy Birthday Baby (#7), 23. Happy Happy Birthday Baby (#8), 24. Dialogue, 25. Tumblin' Tumbleweeds / Blue Moon / Don't You Know I Love You, 26. Tomorrow Night (#1), 27. Tomorrow Night (#2), 28. Little Darlin', 29. Monologue, 30. Just A Closer Walk With Thee - Session 4: 31. At The Hop (#1), 32. I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen (#1), 33. I Believe: The Gospel Masters is a collection devoted to the King’s gospel music. This is (almost) a blueprint of the release Peace in the Valley (2008), although the package is more costly this time. It contains only three home recordings, and cannot be called “complete” in any way. The tracks are taken from Session 7 (February 1966 - early 1967, the Rocca Place, Hollywood, California). Note there is included a different version of “Hide Thou Me” on this release compared to the version used on the aforementioned Peace in the Valley.
