What is an EP?

EP is short for Extended Play, which means "extra playing time". Wikipedia defines Ep as a “recording that contains more music than a single, but is usually too short to qualify as a full studio album or LP”. Originally the term EP referred to a vinyl record, but the term is currently also used on certain CDs.

In the UK the EP was defined as a record containing 25 minutes playing time and/ or 4 music tracks. The definition of the term is important because it regulates which chart the record should be included in.

In a historical perspective

Columbia Records introduced the LP (Long Play Record) in 1948. Four years later, in 1952, RCA introduced the EP (Extended Play Record) to compete with Columbia with a cheaper format. The EP contained at the most seven and a half minutes of music on each side, even though it had the same size (7 inches) as a single and it played at the same speed (45 rpm). The EPs was released with picture cover, at a time when the single still often was just covered in a brown no picture sleeve.

An EP consisted of two or three tracks on each side, and often an entire album was released on two or three EP records. For instance, Elvis' debut album Elvis Presley was released on three EP's. In other cases did an EP consist of a collection of singles, this is something that often occurred with the Elvis catalogue. Billboard introduced a separate chart for EP records, and Elvis ended up being the artist with the most chart positions. Billboard discontinued the EP chart in 1967.

If we ignore the multiple EP records released by RCA, this format was quite rare in the United States and Canada. However, in the UK and the rest of Europe the EP record was fairly popular in the 50s and 60s.

In the 70s and 80s, the whole concept of an EP record slowly changed, and during this time span releases in this category consisted of 7, 10 and 12-inch vinyl records, which were to be played at both 33 and 45 rpm. Beyond the 80s many singles contained more than two tracks. Because of these variations, the definition of singles and Eps changed. Now we classify an EP as a record that contains four or more tracks of equal importance, while a single has a clear main track (an A side).

I 1948 introduserte Columbia Records LP-platen.

Billboard avviklet EP-listene i 1967.

The Maxi-single

The term Maxi-single first appeared in the 70s, and then it usually referred to a 7-inch vinyl record with an extended mix of a song on one side, and two songs on the second side. Later corresponding releases was released on 12 inch vinyl records with the same 45 rpm as a regular single. These records often contained extended versions of the same song on both sides, and were used by DJs.

In the 80s it was therefore a common practice to release a "normal" 7-inch single with two songs, and a 12-inch Maxi-single with remixed versions of songs that were included on the regular single.

When the CD-single was firmly established as the new format in the late 80s, it became customary to release both a regular CD single with two tracks, and a Maxi-single with three to five tracks, usually with remixed versions of the main track. (Learn more about the CD single here)

(Les mer om CD-singel her)
