A Year With The King

  • I was once asked: "Why Elvis? What is it that fascinates you so strongly about him?" A good question. For me it is the music, the man and the myth - the whole package. Still, nearly 60 years after the breakthrough, and 35 years after his death, Elvis holds a unique position in the history of music. Elvis was not first, nor was he the best singer, nor did he make his own songs. Anyway, he was unique: If he wasn’t first, he was the shining star who fronted a new cultural revolution among youth in the fifties. If he wasn’t the best singer technically, he had a unique ability to touch people with his voice. If he did not make his own songs, he did in reality nothing but, since his interpretations put all the original versions in total darkness.
Elvis is in many ways much greater than man. His cultural influence in the Western world is so big that "ELVIS" has become a concept. He holds an iconic status that cannot be compared. It is estimated that around 1,000 people visits John Lennon's grave every year. It is 1000.000 people who visits Elvis' grave at Graceland every year. This says everything about Elvis' sole position in pop history; Elvis extends far beyond the matter of music. Throughout the article series "A Year With The King", I want to give the answer to that question I received: "Why Elvis?"... "This is why!"

Gjennom artikkelserien «A Year With The King» ønsker jeg å gi svaret på det spørsmålet jeg fikk: «Hvorfor akkurat Elvis?»... «Dette er hvorfor!»
